Islamic State advances on Kurdish town in Syria after U.S

MURSITPINAR Turkey/BEIRUT  - Islamic State has reinforced fighters who are

battling Kurdish forces for control of a Syrian town at the border with Turkey, a

redeployment triggered by U.S.-led air strikes on the group elsewhere, a Kurdish military

official said.

Ocalan Iso, deputy leader of the Kurdish forces defending the town of Kobani at

the Turkish border, said more Islamic State fighters and tanks had arrived since the U.S.-led

coalition began air strikes on the group on Tuesday.

The number of their fighters has increased, the number of their tanks has

increased since the bombardment of Raqqa," Iso told Reuters by telephone. He repeated

calls for the U.S.-led coalition to expand its air strikes to Islamic State positions near

Kobani, which is also known as Ayn al-Arab.

"Kobani is in danger,"

The U.S.-led air strikes on Islamic State in Syria have so far targeted the

provinces of Raqqa, Deir al-Zor and Hasakah. Islamic State launched a major offensive

against Kobani last week, forcing nearly 140,000 Syrian Kurds to flee across the border into

Turkey within days - the largest and fastest exodus of civilians since the Syrian conflict

began in 2011.

Iso said Islamic State fighters had advanced to within 8 km (5 miles) from the

southern periphery of Kobani - closer than they have been at any stage in the latest

offensive.

"We call on American forces to hit their positions. They are 8 km from Kobani.

They were 25 km away before,".

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks violence in the Syrian

conflict, earlier reported air strikes on Islamic State positions to the west of Kobani by

warplanes that appeared to cross from Turkey.

But Kurdish officials in Kobani could not confirm the report, and Turkey said

neither its air space nor a U.S. air base in the southern Turkish town of Incirlik had been

used in the air strikes.

A group of several dozen Syrian Kurds who had fled the fighting watched from

a hillside on the Turkish side of the border as Kurdish fighters battled Islamic State

militants in a cluster of villages called Siftek. The sound of sporadic artillery and gunfire

echoed around the hills.

The Kurds appeared to be firing mortars from the back of a truck into a village

where Islamic State had taken up positions.

Because of the bombing in Raqqa, Islamic State has taken all of their weapons

and brought them here. There are more and more Islamic State fighters in the last two days,

they have brought all their forces here," said Ahmed Hassan, 60, a Syrian Kurd who fled to

Turkey with his family.

They have heavy weapons. We are running away from them. YPG haven't got

heavy weapons. That's why we need help," he said, referring to the main Kurdish armed

group.

Idris Nassan, deputy minister for foreign affairs in a Kurdish administration

controlling the Kobani area, said Islamic State remained around 15 km from the town in the

east and west but had advanced in the south to within 10 km after heavy clashes with

Kurdish forces.

KBC gets its first Rs.7-crore winners

Two brothers from Delhi have become the first to hit the jackpot by winning the

maximum prize money of Rs.7 crore in a special edition of TV reality game show

"Kaun Banega Crorepati".

The Narula brothers - Achin, 24, and Sarthak, 23, - won the mega amount on the

'Jori special' episode of the eighth season of the show, hosted by megastar Amitabh

Bachchan.

"This was unexpected and it is totally unbelievable. We had thought we will win

about Rs.25 lakh and then we will leave. But this has turned out to be a life-defining

moment for us," Achin, who is into marketing, told IANS.

His brother Sarthak is a student

According to a source from the set, the duo was extremely positive and calm on

the 'Hot Seat' and answered questions with confidence and ease.

"I knew the answers to the last two questions," Achin said, adding that the bigger

challenge was sitting in front of a personality like Big B.

"The atmosphere on the set with Bachchan, the audience, the music...it all adds

up to the thrill," he said.

Now how will they spend such a big amount

"One can't plan these things. It's a huge amount and we will definitely spend it

wisely," said Achin, whose family went through financial losses and had to sell off their

house to pay debts, six years ago.

"Over the years, the show has evolved from being just a knowledge-based game

show to something which is greatly appreciated and aspirational to our audience. We hope

KBC continues to inspire people the way it has been all these years," Gaurav Seth, senior

vice president, marketing, Sony Entertainment Television, said in a statement.

Siddharth Basu, chairman and managing director, Big Synergy Media Ltd., which

produced the show, said: "We have been waiting for a moment like this since the inception

of this show. It is a pleasure to see bright brains like Achin and Sarthak battle it out for the

'Maha Jackpot'."

Bilawal Bhutto says he will get back entire Kashmir

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan's Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that his party Pakistan

People's Party will get back entire Kashmir from India.

Addressing his party workers in Multan, Benazir Bhutto's son Bilawal Bhutto

Zardari was quoted by PTI saying: 'I will take back Kashmir, all of it, and I will not leave

behind a single inch of it because, like the other provinces, it belongs to Pakistan.'

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Monday announced he will contest the 2018 general

elections from his mother's home constituency.

But his comments were not taken kindly by the Congress and BJP. Both the

parties rubbished Bilawal's claims that Kashmir belonged to Pakistan.

Terming Bilawal's remarks as immature, BJP's Subramanian Swamy said: 'I

think it is a very immature comment. Young man is totally inexperienced in politics and for

family reasons he has been promoted to this position as patron- in- chief of the PPP. But he

should learn a lesson that India is capable of finishing the existence of Pakistan if it comes

to a war. We do not want a war; we have fought four wars and have won all of them.'

"In 1971 we could have finished off West Pakistan but we decided not to finish

the identity of Pakistan. So if this kind of talks takes place and especially on a matter which

is legally settled. When the Instrument of Accession was signed, it was final," he added.

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit echoing similar sentiments said Bilawal's

statement has no relevance, adding that Jammu and Kashmir is an unbreakable and an

undivided part of India.

The Ministry of External Affairs also rejected Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's comment

saying that India's unity and integrity is non-negotiable.

"I don't need to comment on any comment which is so far away from reality,

which takes us back into the past century. We are in the process of looking forward, and

looking forward does not mean our borders will be changed," MEA official spokesperson

Syed Akbaruddin said.   more >>

NBC Admits Error On Christie Bridgegate Report

It looks as if Brian Williams got too far out over his skis with a report on New

Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's link to the "Bridgegate" scandal.

On Friday, NBC News admitted Nightly News anchor Brian Williams' report that

federal charges for Christie had been ruled out in the "Bridgegate" investigation was

incorrect.

In fact, the probe into the closing of lanes on the George Washington Bridge in

September 2013has not found Christie to have had prior knowledge of the closure "thus

far." "The investigation is continuing,'' Rebekah Carmichael, a spokeswoman for U.S.

Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman told the Asbury Park Press, who was first to catch

NBC's correction.

NBC acknowledged the error on Friday. "An unscripted line of our Nightly News

report was imprecise and implied that a final decision had been reached," an NBC

spokesperson said of Williams' report.

On Thursday night, Williams said that "federal charges are now ruled out for

Chris Christie in the affair that came to be known as Bridgegate." The headline on the

segment's website was "'Bridgegate' Investigators Find No Link to Chris Christie."

Tanishaa Mukerji And Armaan Kohli To Get Married Soon

Tanishaa Mukerji And Armaan Kohli To Get Married Soon

It was only recently that Tanishaa Mukerji- Armaan Kohli had supposedly broken

up, and then we spotted them making an appearance at the 5th Jagran Film Festival,

meeting their buddies from the Bigg Boss house Elli Avram and VJ Andy, and even clicked

pictures together!

The reason for the alleged split was Kohli’s aggressive behaviour.

And after the film festival, Mika Singh tweeted, “Good news for all friends that armaankohli

& Tanishaa Mukerji is getting married soon!! Guys Give them ur best wishes. Congrats!

Elli Avram also tweeted an intimate picture of the her and VJ Andy with the

couple: “Had a great time at Midday Party & then spending time with iAmVJAndy Tanishaa

Mukerji armaankohli.

Tanishaa and Armaangave hints about their relationship during their stay in the

controversial Bigg Boss house last season, which was hosted by Salman Khan. Mukerji‘s

family was against the relationship at first, but eventually gave in, looking at how adamant

Tanishaa was for the relationship to work.

Tanishaa's mother Tanuja, however, allowed her daughter to celebrate New Year

with her boyfriend at the Lonavala farmhouse and infact she also accompanied them to

Vaishno Devi. Such frequent outings of the couple only made their relationship an obvious affair.

And as per rumors, the couple is already engaged, where Armaan apparently

gave his lady love a huge solitaire diamond ring, which the latter obviously adores!

Tanishaa is in a relationship with Armaan inspire of a lot of cinching and misbehaving from the latter.

Tanishaa has had a great deal of patience with him and has been seen saying

throughout, ‘Armaan is my best friend. He has been very supportive of me, both inside and

outside the house. We are close friends, the rest I leave for the people to judge. I don’t

believe that I was treated like a doormat. If people think that way, it is their opinion and I

can’t change that. I know who I am and what I stand for and that is what matters to me.’

"Happy" to Miss America

New york Kira Kazantsev "Happy" to be crowned Miss America

New Yorker Kira Kazantsev won the coveted 2015 Miss America Pageant crown

on Sunday, a "three-peat" for contenders from the Big Apple.

As part of the competition, Kazantsev, 23, sang Pharrell William's song "Happy",

keeping time by tapping a red plastic cup. She said in a question-and-answer segment that

sexual assault in the U.S. military was a problem that needed to be addressed by U.S. lawmakers.

Wearing a long-sleeved, backless white gown and clutching red roses, the

newest Miss America walked the runway with a wide smile and waved to a cheering crowd

in Atlantic City, where the 94-year-old beauty pageant returned last year after eight years in Las Vegas.

Kazantsev's win marked New York's third consecutive Miss America title. The

crown was handed to Kazantsev by Nina Davuluri, a New Yorker and the first Indian-

American winner. Davuluri was the successor to Mallory Hagan from New York.

Kira's platform is focused on protecting women from domestic violence, and the

Miss America Organization said she regularly spoke at homeless and domestic violence shelters.

Pageant judges scored contestants from the 50 U.S. states, the District of

Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands based on a talent competition, a personal

interview, their answers to an on-stage question, and their appearance in gowns and swimsuits.

Atlantic City officials hope the pageant will help revive the city in the wake of

recent financial turmoil. The pageant was held in a hall next to Trump Plaza, whose slated

shutdown on Tuesday means the gambling mecca will have lost a third of its casinos since

the start of the year.   more >>

Parineeti Chopra And Her Explosive Reactions

Parineeti chopra And Her Explosive Reactions

Parineeti Chopra defies all norms of being a heroine. She by her own

admission had said that she is a foodie and hence the weight. She tries to keep it in check

but it is tough for her. Yet everybody including boys don’t mind her weight. Her spunk and

liveliness have caught everyone’s attention. But there are certain things that Pari believes in

and won’t listen to anyone who says otherwise.

Parineeti is still untouched by annoying diplomacy celebs take to when asked

about other. Recently when she was told that Sonam Kapoor reacted with ‘It’s Okay’ while

commenting on Khoobsurat clashing with Dawaat-e-Ishq and the competition thereof,

Parineeti quirkily added that she is glad Sonam ‘allowed’ her film to release alongside hers.

She also said ‘It’s Okay’ for Khoobsurat. Now who doesn’t like such a witty actress? How

many are there of such nature here?

Parineeti cannot be judged as outspoken but when she believes in something,

she doesn’t mind going hammer and tongs about it. At the Whisper event, when a journalist

called Periods a problem, Parineeti gave her a good piece of mind. She didn’t disrespect

him but sternly made him understand Periods are not a problem for females, selective

ignorance about it is.

Similarly she lashed out at a scribe for suggesting that young girls like to do it

(sex) but when they get older, they don’t during a press conference of Shuddh Desi

Romance. She gave him an earful for talking trash even after being an aged and mature person. more >>

Top-Secret Method

Top-Secret Method allowed a mother from New Delhi to break the world record

My lifestyle had never made it easy for me to lose weight, I've always been a
sweet-tooth and didn't feel like going to the gym or taking too much care of myself, so I
wasn't really a slim, attractive kind of girl. My husband didn't mind that too much, but once
in a while, when chatting to his friends, he would mention that'she's not exactly Katrina
Kaif...'It wasn't too nice to hear, but I can't blame him as I'd really let myself go, especially in the last 4 years.

I tried to change something a few times, but real discipline and scrupulous counting of calories sounded bizzare to me. Naturally, I'd gone through attempts that lasted a few days, various treatments, but I knew how they would end even before I started. The great breakthrough came on January 13th.

I remember that sunny, brisk day and the peaceful atmosphere that in no way indicated the tremendous changes which were coming my way in the form of a little white bottle full of magical pills. I got it from my sister who was living in the US and it had a note attached to it that read: 'Give it a go, Shreya, here in the US it's'an absolute weight loss hit.'It contained a natural product created in accordance with the Flat Stomach Principle, which is aimed at replenishing the single nutrient in the body that's responsible for burning excess fat. Was it really why no diet so far had worked for me.

I started researching the Flat Stomach Principle and the supplement and read thousands of opinions on different websites. They wrote that the products worked great on slow metabolism and was very effective, and it didn't develop dependency. I couldn't get it in the UK back then.

I was lucky enough to get my package for a way smaller price than my sister had paid, which was more than enough for a 2-month treatment. I took 2 pills every day, before breakfast and dinner, I also drank more water than usual. And that was it - no special diet or exercise. And the weight was systematically dropping since day one.  more >>

Shweta Basu sex scandal

Shweta Basu sex scandal: Bollywood is just a fence sitter in her case

From the look of things, now that Mardaani is out, the actress has absolved

herself from the responsibilities of being a women's rights' activists. In a recent press

conference, the actress was asked about actress Shweta Basu Prasad's involvement in a

prostitution ring, but Mukerji, who was last seen saving a bunch of girls from a prostitution

racket onscreen, refused to comment. With Mardaani almost two weeks old, Mukerji

obviously has no need to answer questions about such issues and so she did what most

Bollywood heroines do - maintain a diplomatic silence that only serves to make them look

hypocritical.

It isn't just Mukerji who has kept mum on Prasad's case. While some have been

prompt at pointing out the young actress' fall from graceand one section has furiously

lashed out at them for not revealing the names of her clients and just going after her, the

actors Prasad has worked with and the wider film fraternity has decided to sit on the fence.

Considering how so many aspiring actors enter film industries all over the

country and are often exploited by power brokers within the industry, you'd think that the

least that B-town's rich and famous could do is be sympathetic to an actor who felt she

had no option but to resort to becoming a sex worker. However, there's been very little by

way of a public show of support for Prasad.  more >>

more >>

Quit smoking

Watch the U.S. quit smoking over 40 years

Americans consumed an average of more than 125 packs of cigarettes a year.

But the combination of higher taxes on tobacco products and more education on the

dangers of smoking has led to a precipitous decline in the number of people who light up.

Today, Americans consume just over 46 packs of cigarettes per capita every year.

The map-making magicians at Metric Maps used that data, from an annual

report on the tax burden of tobacco prepared by the Federation of Tax Administrators, to

show that decline on a state-by-state basis. In 1970, residents in all but two states smoked

more than 90 packs of cigarettes a year. By 2012, residents of just three states — Kentucky,

West Virginia and New Hampshire — smoke that much.

Today, all 50 states and the District of Columbia levy taxes on packs of cigarettes

and other tobacco products. That wasn’t always the case: Iowa instituted the first tobacco

tax, way back in 1921; that year, the state collected $324,000 in taxes. North Carolina was

the last holdout; the Tar Heel State levied its first tax on cigarettes, 2 cents a pack, in 1969.  more >>

According to an interesting study, couples who waited longer to have sex while in a relationship were more likely to see higher levels of marital quality."

Forty-two percent of those who said their relationship did not begin as a 'hook-up' were most satisfied on marital quality," said psychologists Galena K. Rhoades and Scott M. Stanley associated with the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia.

The participants who said their relationship began as a "hook-up" were less likely to have a higher quality marriage.

Of those who said their relationship began with a "hook up", a mere 36 percent ranked in the top 40 percent of overall respondents for marriage quality, the website KMBZ.com reported.

The authors analysed data from the US relationship development study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

The study recruited over 1,000 Americans between 2007 and 2008 who were unmarried but in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex and between the ages of 18 and 34.

The authors also found that the majority of them had sex before marriage with multiple partners.   more   >>

Formula one: Hamilton puts pressure on Rosberg with Italy win

Lewis Hamilton battled back from an agonisingly slow start to win the Italian

Grand Prix for Mercedes on Sunday and slash team mate Nico Rosberg's Formula One

championship lead to 22 points.

Rosberg finished second as dominant Mercedes celebrated their first one-two

since Austria in June and seventh in 13 races. With the sport taking a deep breath as the

championship rivals lined up together on the front row, two weeks after they had collided in

Belgium, the start provided an immediate sensation.

Hamilton had taken pole position for the first time since May but problems with

the car's start mode left him struggling to get away and fourth into the first corner as

Rosberg sped away untroubled.

It was the start of a thrilling chase, with the 2008 world champion fighting back

and retaking when Rosberg missed the first chicane as he had done earlier in the race. With

the German under pressure and driving straight on, slowing and weaving to get back on

track, Hamilton seized the lead in the decisive moment of the afternoon. The two crossed

the finish line 3.1 seconds apart, with Hamilton celebrating his first win since Britain in

July. It was his fifth of the season and 28th of his career, taking him ahead of triple

champion Jackie Stewart in the all-time lists.

"It was a difficult race," said Hamilton. "For whatever reason, at the start the

button didn't press which engages the launch sequence."For the formation lap it didn't

work and when I got to the grid and put it on again, again it didn't work. It was very strange.

I've never really had that happen before."

I tried to pull away as fast as possible and the RPM was all over the place.

Fortunately I managed to not lose too many places."Rosberg now has 238 points to

Hamilton's 216, with six races remaining after the end of the European part of the

season.Brazilian Felipe Massa finished third for Williams, his first podium appearance

since Spain last year with Ferrari, on Brazilian independence day and after the team had

announced he was staying for 2015.       more  >>

Obama to set out plan

Obama to set out plan to go on offensive against Islamic State

President Barack Obama will deliver a speech to Americans and consult with

lawmakers this week to sell his plan to go on the offensive against Islamic State militants,

but is trying to head off public concern about another big military escapade.

Obama said that in his remarks on Wednesday he would "describe what our

game plan's going to be." He will meet congressional leaders on Tuesday to seek their

support for his strategy to halt the militant Islamist group.

Obama indicated he did not believe he needed additional authorization from

Congress to carry out the plan, although he intends to consult with lawmakers and might

seek approval for additional funds."I'm confident that I have the authorization that I need to

protect the American people," Obama said. "But I do think it's important for Congress to

understand what the plan is, to have 'buy in,' to debate it."

The president, who campaigned for the White House in 2008 on getting U.S.

troops out of Iraq, has struggled to articulate how he wants to address Islamic State, telling

reporters last month that "we don't have a strategy yet" to tackle the group."I'm preparing

the country to make sure that we deal with a threat from ISIL,"

Obama said in an interview aired on Sunday with NBC's "Meet the Press"

program, using an acronym for Islamic State. "The next phase is now to start going on

some offense," he added, promising to "defeat" the group.Obama's comments also seemed

tailored to head off the fears of some Americans and anti-war members of his own party of

another full-scale war. For example, he ruled out sending U.S. ground troops to fight the

militants in Iraq or Syria.

"This is not the equivalent of the Iraq war," Obama added. "What this is, is similar

to the kinds of counterterrorism campaigns that we've been engaging in consistently over

the last five, six, seven years. The speech underscores the degree to which Islamic State

has become an urgent issue for the United States. The Sunni militants have seized territory

in northern Iraq and eastern Syria, declared a border-blurring Islamic caliphate and

released grisly videos of the beheading of two US journalists it had held hostage. more >>

New rules for ATM

ATM Transactions:

Many people have a habit of withdrawing small amounts of money from the ATM

to curb spending tendencies, but often end up with a high frequency of withdrawals. There

are some others who are reluctant to use net banking or mobile banking facilities and

depend on ATMs for checking account balance. If you happen to fall into any of these

categories, it’s time to change your habit for good as RBI has issued new rules and

guidelines limiting the number of times you use your ATM in a month. The new ATM

transaction rules issued by the Reserve Bank of India is applicable to all ATM transactions

including withdrawing cash, checking account balance or getting a mini account

statement.

New RBI ATM Transaction Rules:

According to the new RBI guidelines that come into effect from 1st November

2014, savings bank account holders in metropolitan cities would be allowed only three

transactions from ATMs of other banks and five from the same bank in a month. For any

ATM transaction above the stipulated limit, a transaction fee of Rs. 20 would be charged to

the account holder. The new transaction fee is applicable only for people living in six

metropolitan cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

People living in smaller towns and other centers would continue to enjoy five free monthly

transactions per month from the ATM of other banks and the charges for them include Rs.

20 for each cash withdrawal and Rs 9 for non-cash transactions. Account holders of zero

balance and other no-frills accounts in non metros are exempted from such transaction

charges as of now.

What new Rules Mean for Bank Customers:

The transaction fee has been increased from the earlier limit of Rs. 15 and the

number of free transactions decreased from five to three for ATMs of other banks. Another

important change in the new RBI guideline policy for ATM transaction fee is the fact that all

ATM transactions including cash withdrawal, balance enquiry and changing of PIN number

etc would be considered as an ATM transaction unlike in the past when balance enquiry

was not considered a transaction as such!

A Case for Capping ATM Transaction Limit:

While capping the charges for ATM usage may be an unpopular decision taken

by the Reserve Bank of India, the limit in free transactions is justified by the apex body

considering high expenses for managing ATMs across the country. With an increasing

number of robbery attempts on various ATMs especially in isolated areas and in semi

urban and rural areas, the banks have been forced to shell out funds to install a security

mechanism apart from using CCTVs and manual security guards wherever possible.    more >>

Acid victims

A fashion photo shoot featuring five victims of acid attacks is drawing wide attention in India. While the country keeps no official statistics on acid attacks, there are regular reports in the media of attackers targeting victims to disfigure or blind them, often because of spurned sexual advances.

The 41 photos show 22-year-old Rupa and four friends laughing and striking playful poses while wearing some of her fashion designs."

I told them to be natural. I didn't do any makeup or editing. I told them, you look beautiful and you have to be the way you are," said the photographer, Rahul Saharan, who volunteers with the Stop Acid Attacks charity and is working on a documentary about acid victims. "They are very confident, so it was not too hard for me."

The photos have been shared widely since being posted on the Facebook page run by the group, and have also been picked up by TV stations and newspapers. The joy and confidence the five women display defy the horrific stories they tell.

Rupa's face was doused with acid when she was 15 years old by a stepmother unwilling to pay her marriage expenses. The wedding was called off. The photo shoot has brought in funding that will enable her dream of opening a boutique to come true.Laxmi, now 22, was also 15 when she was attacked by her brother's 32-year-old friend after she refused his marriage proposal.

Earlier this year, U.S. first lady Michelle Obama presented her with the International Women of Courage Award for campaigning against such attacks.Ritu, 22, was attacked by her cousin during a property dispute. Sisters Sonam, 22, and Chanchal, 17, were asleep when acid was poured over them by a group of men who had been harassing them in their village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.  more >>
