more >>

Who fought to become coal king

JHARKHAND (DHANBAD)  Engaged in a war of attrition with two members of the family fighting against each other for the Jharia assembly seat. From controlling illegal activities in the coal business to spreading a reign of terror in Dhanbad and its surrounding areas for decades, the dreaded Singh clan, allegedly involved in several murder. Sanjiv Singh, son of Suryadeo Singh, is contesting on BJP ticket while his elder cousin, Niraj Singh, is the Congress candidate. Both share a bitter relationship, including legal wrangling over property.

Niraj an engineering graduate from Agra University, "But my electoral fight is not against him. It is against BJP, against the problems of Jharia like displacement, lack of Sanjiv is out to retain the seat, which his mother, Kunti Singh, won in 2005 and 2009 from BJP. "I want to serve the people of Jharia, which was represented by my parents (his father was MLA from 1977 till his death in 1991). But he (Niraj) is trying to come in my way," says Sanjiv, who is making his poll debut. I have come to Jharia because he has been messing around with me for the last few years. People here have not seen any development in the last 10 years when Kunti Devi was the MLA. I want to work for them. It's no anarchy and MLAship is not a matter of inheritance; in a democracy, people will decide their representative.

In 2009 assembly elections, Niraj made his debut from Dhanbad as an Independent and finished third. The next year, he became deputy mayor of Dhanbad as an Independent, but joined Congress in August this year. The rivalry between the cousins is not limited to the political arena. Locals say they have differences over business dealings, ancestral property and controlling Janta Mazdoor Sangh, a trade union started by Surajdeo that plays a major role in the coal belt.

Both the Singhs move around the area with their henchmen and armed escorts in SUVs. For the uninitiated, such has been the clout of the Singhs that one of the main characters (Ramadhir Singh) in the Anurag Kashyap-directed Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), which focused on Dhanbad's coal mafia, is said to be based on Suryadeo. In reality, one of Suryadeo's brothers is named Ramadhir. Tales of Suryadeo and his rivalry with trade unionists B P Sinha, S K Roy and et al are legendary in this part of the world.

Even stories about Congress leader Suresh Singh, touted as the 'coal king' following Suryadeo's death in 1991, abound. Going by police, Ramadhir's son Sashi shot Suresh at a wedding party in December 2011 and is since absconding. Ramadhir and Sanjiv were named accused in the case and the former is facing trial in another murder case. The family stands divided and its influence on the wane. While Sanjiv is backed by his uncles Ramadhir and Bikram Singh (who lives in their native place Ballia in UP), Niraj, son of late Rajan Singh, enjoys the support of his uncle and former minister Bachcha Singh.

While Sanjiv (30) is into coal transport, 35-year-old Niraj has stakes in real estate and amusement business. Both deny wrongdoing. "Not a single person would say Suryadeo or his immediate family members ever interfered in anybody doing business. We are transparent and even allowed construction of multi-storey buildings from where anyone can see the goings on inside the mansion," avers Sanjiv, with his mother nodding in agreement. "My husband did a lot of good work for the people.

Why Naturally Succumb to my Charm

Shiv Kumar Yadav believes he is something of a female magnet. Accused of serial rape — the latest being that of a 25-year-old executive in his Uber cab — he has told police interrogators that women naturally succumb to his charm. When they are not offering him sexual favours in exchange for cash or a free ride in his cab.
The 32-year-old, 5-feet-6-inches, 60-kg man has certainly made a big impression on the Delhi Police. Hardened interrogators are surprised at the extent of delusion of this unremarkable-looking man, his obsession with sex, and his consummate urge to lie and mislead. The police on Thursday said they would add Yadav to the list of repeat sexual offenders. A city court sent him to  14 day judicial custody.

His mobile phones are apparently packed with porn, the glove compartment of his cab well-stocked with contraceptives. Yadav ran his cab service mostly at night, waiting for customers — especially women — outside malls, cinema halls, restaurants and pubs. He would take special interest in lurking around pubs and bars, hoping for women to come out and hire his cab, too buzzed to resist his advances.

He also frequently offered a ride to sex workers late in the night, the police told HT, his favourite hunting ground being MG Road in Gurgaon. The ride would not be entirely free; he asked for sexual favours in return. Yadav has gone on to effectively use this sex-for-money trope to wriggle out of a 2011 rape charge, and is trying it in the current case as well.
Yadav has apparently told his interrogators that he first had sex when he was 14 with a girl  from his village in UP’s Mainpuri. He went on to marry his elder brother’s widow — a brother who supposedly was the only one who could discipline him a bit — and has two daughters from her and a stepson. The police are convinced that Yadav is a liar and dodger par excellence. He has two driving licences, one obviously illegal. He said he owned only one phone, but the police have recovered two more.

South India make up 50% of HIV

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka account for 3.6 lakh HIV cases, about 50% of the patients in the country. The southern states are also among the top four in the country, with Tamil Nadu alone having  80,000 HIV  affected people of the total 7.7 lakh as on May 2014.
ANDHRA PRADESH tops the list with 1.7 lakh HIV affected people, followed by Maharashtra with 1.43 lakh people. Karnataka has just over one lakh people with HIV, according to the Union ministry of health and family welfare. These are the only states with more than one lakh people with HIV.
Gujarat is listed with 40,000  cases. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, which are larger both in area and population. The rising numbers in the southern states are attributed to efficient screening over the last few years.

The state governments along with non-governmental organizations have ensured compulsory screening up to the village level, which has resulting in better documentation and  recording of HIV case.

Though the cumulative numbers are high in the south, the number of fresh cases being recorded every year has dropped significantly since 2010. According to the health ministry, the total number new cases has reduced almost 52% across the country in three years—from 3.2  lakh fresh cases in 2010-11 to 1.6 lakh cases in 2013-14. Andhra Pradesh,  Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also saw a sharp fall in the number of fresh cases reported every year.

The drop in the number of fresh cases is due to the increasing awareness among the public, especially the risk-pron communities of sex workers, homosexuals and transgenders.    more >>
